The 5-Step Song Learning Method
Step 1: Listen and Map the Structure
Before touching your guitar, listen to the song 2-3 times and identify the sections: intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro. Note how many bars each section has.
Step 2: Find the Key and Chords
Identify the key by finding the "home" chord — the one that feels most resolved. Then find each chord in the progression.
Step 3: Learn the Rhythm
Listen for the strumming pattern. Is it straight 8ths? Syncopated? Fingerpicked? Match the feel before worrying about perfection.
Step 4: Practice Section by Section
Don't try to play the whole song at once. Master the verse, then the chorus, then connect them. Use a metronome at 50-70% speed first.
Step 5: Play Along with the Recording
Once each section is comfortable, play along with the original. Use a slow-downer app if needed.
