Guitar Hybrid Picking - Combine Pick and Fingers for Ultimate Versatility

Master hybrid picking on guitar. Learn to combine flatpick and fingers for country licks, arpeggios, chord-melody, and techniques impossible with pick alone.

    Why Hybrid Picking?

Hybrid picking gives you the best of both worlds: the power and articulation of a flatpick combined with the string independence of fingerpicking. You can play simultaneous notes on non-adjacent strings, add fingerstyle textures to picked passages, and access techniques that neither pick nor fingers alone can achieve.

    Hand Position and Notation

    Standard hybrid picking finger labels:

    • p = pick (thumb + index holding flatpick)
    • m = middle finger
    • a = ring finger
    • c = pinky finger (advanced)

Keep your middle and ring fingers curled naturally. When plucking, use a snap motion — pulling the string toward your palm rather than lifting away from the body.
