    The Science Behind Improvisation

    Chord-Scale Relationships

Improvisation starts by understanding which scales work over which chords. Each chord implies a scale or mode that contains its chord tones.

    Target Notes

When improvising, certain notes within a scale create stronger resolutions. These "target notes" are often chord tones (1, 3, 5, 7).

    Root
    3
    Third
    5
    Fifth
    7
    Seventh

    Tension and Release

Great improvisation balances tension and release. Tension notes (2, 4, 6, b9, #11) create interest when resolved to stable chord tones.

    Rhythm & Phrasing

Rhythm is as important as note choice. Strong improvisation uses a mix of:

    Short Notes
    Long Notes
    Rests
    Syncopation
